Door and Window Manufacturer (DWM) magazine featured its grand award winner in its third annual green awards in the November-December issue. The winner was chosen from the dealer category, but the magazine is also featuring nominees in some of the other groups as well. This week DWM features a nominee—Quanex Building Products—in the component supplier category.
Quanex Building Products was nominated for its MikronWood™. According to the company, this product delivers superior energy efficiency results through “a revolutionary material that offers the beauty of wood in a no-maintenance composite, dramatically increasing energy-efficiency performance and durability over its lifetime.”
When MikronWood is combined with high-performance glazing units, products can achieve U-factors less than 0.30, according to the company.
The material is a blend of specialty polymer resins, or “Thermoplastic Alloy,” which is a composite combination of both PVC and acrylic-based resins. “This unique blend of resins cannot absorb moisture, so it provides a very stable, rot-proof material,” according to Quanex.
The company adds that due to its solid-core, cellular structure, the material saws and mills very similar to wood with existing wood fabrication tools. “Compared to fiberglass, MikronWood joints are weldable and thus more weather resistant, preventing failures and costly callbacks. The material is also heat-bendable to create specialty window shapes,” according to Quanex.
