PGT Celebrates 25 Years as Manufacturer of Custom Windows and Doors
Venice, Fla.-based PGT Industries, manufacturer of WinGuard impact-resistant windows and doors, marked its 25th year in business in October.
When the company was founded as Vinyl-Tech in 1980, the company focused its operations on aluminum vinyl-glazed windows which were used as porch enclosure systems. By 1987, PGT was manufacturing its first line of glass windows with the name PGT (Progressive Glass Technology). By 1988, the company had added tool and die making and injection molding to its manufacturing capabilities.
In January 2003, PGT acquired Binnings Building Products of Lexington, N.C., forming PGT North Carolina operations. To support expansion of WinGuard into northern coastal regions, PGT recently moved manufacturing of WinGuard with vinyl frames to the Lexington plant.
After Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in 1992 and prompted sweeping building codes, PGT developed WinGuard, the first complete line of residential aluminum impact-resistant windows and doors to be approved by the Miami-Dade building code compliance office, and helped develop the testing protocols used by Miami-Dade.
PGT is devoted to updating dealers and its employees on changes in building codes and advances in hurricane protection. The company currently offers 21 classes at PGT University, the company's state-of-the-art training facility in Venice, Fla. To date, more than 15,000 architects, building officials, contractors and other interested parties have received training and continuing education credits at PGTU at no charge.
Today, the privately-held company employs more than 2,100 at its 485,000-square-foot manufacturing, glass plant and delivery fleet facilities in Venice, Fla., and its 230,000-square-foot production facility in Lexington. Sold through a network of authorized dealers and distributors, the company's total line of custom windows and doors is now available throughout the United States, and in a growing international market, which includes the Caribbean, South America and Australia.
