New ASTM Sustainability Committee Seeks Vinyl Representatives

Vinyl industry businesspeople are encouraged to join a new ASTM technical committee devoted to sustainability.

According to an ASTM press release, this new ASTM committee "will bring diverse stakeholders together to create the consensus standards that will further promote and integrate sustainable development across multiple industry sectors." The committee was formed at the urging of the Environmental Protection Agency.

This new committee will have a major role in developing standards for building and construction, consumer products, hospitality, agriculture, finance and corporate management, healthcare, water management and others.

The committee will also assume coordination for ASTM standardization efforts on sustainability currently managed throughout other existing ASTM committees. These include the activities of Subcommittee E06.71 on Sustainability, which is part of ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings. While many suppliers of building products were not members of E 6.71, they were allowed to participate at the main ASTM E 6 committee level on Performance of Buildings. With the formation of a stand-alone committee on sustainability, participation by building product suppliers in ASTM E 6 on Performance of Buildings will no longer be possible.

Building product suppliers will, however, be allowed to participate on the new ASTM committee on sustainability, and to achieve true consensus status, it is vital to have all interested parties adequately represented.

For membership or information on future ASTM meetings, contact Pat Picariello, director, developmental operations, ASTM International; 610/832-9720; ppicarie@astm.org.
